Advanced Technique Tip 1
Placing Matrix Band When the Restoration is Conservative

Due to their thinness, small size and 3-dimensional curvature, placement of matrix bands can sometimes be difficult, especially when some contact with the adjacent tooth exists. Several techniques can help:

1a. Break contact using a very thin carbide burr (Figure 4). A very small diameter carbide finishing burr, such as the Brassler ET, will conservatively remove tooth structure so that the band can be placed. Although some dentists may be reluctant to break contact, the result will be an anatomical proximal surface and a tight, natural proximal contact.

1b. Over-curl matrix band, and pull it laterally between the teeth (Figures 5 and 6). Grasp matrix in the upper-outside corner using a dressing forceps (preferred) or hemostat. Over-curl the band with thumb and forefinger. Unfurl the matrix by pulling it laterally though the interproximal space (buccal-to-lingual or vise versa). This will prevent the matrix from hanging up on the gingival floor of the prepared tooth as often occurs when the band is placed occlusally.

(Figure 4) A thin break in contact aids in band placement.

(Figure 5) Over-curl the matrix band to help the band to wrap around the tooth.

(Figure 6) Pulling the matrix laterally through the contact area keeps the matrix from hanging up on the gingival floor.
