Composi-Tight Advanced Techniques
September 1999
Advanced Technique Tip 3
Tackling Restorations with Wide Embrasures (cusp missing)
Wide embrasures are encountered frequently, especially on teeth previously restored with amalgam. Composi-Tight can be used on teeth with a missing cusp by placing the ring tines behind the wedge.
3a. Wedge from the side where the cusp is missing. In this case, the wedge is inserted lingual to buccal so that enough bulk from the wedge is present to support the ring tine.
3b. To prevent band from collapsing into the preparation, the ring tine must be placed behind the wedge on the side with the missing cusp (Figure 9).
3c. Place ring on opposite side of wedge (distal to wedge on side where cusp is missing). Some composite flash will result, but holding the band during light curing will reduce this, and flash is accessible and can be easily removed with a finishing burr.

(Figure 9) Curl and place band. Wedge from side with large prep extension (missing cusp). Place G-Ring tine behind the wedge. Burnish band to establish contact.
(Figure 10) Hold band during curing to reduce excessive flash from composite. Excess flash can be trimmed with a finishing burr. |
