Benefits beyond speed.
Speed tops the list of features a dentist looks for in selecting diamonds. But a close second on the list of dentists surveyed by Garrison Dental was "longevity" or the number of uses one gets from a diamond, followed by "resistance to clogging" and "feel" or the amount of vibration or chatter of the instrument. "Surface smoothness" had widely mixed reviews as a feature, and "price" was least important as a selection criteria. We will briefly explore each of these qualities and how G-Force excels in each of these areas. Longevity. Preliminary clinical trials of G-Force diamonds have shown vast improvements in the number of uses before discarding. Evaluating dentists have reported a substantial increase in the number of tooth preparations able to be obtained with a single instrument. Studies by CRA have shown the time to prepare a crown for most diamonds to double after approximately five uses.1 Further testing is needed to study the longevity of G-Force diamonds, but initial estimates by pre market evaluators indicate they feel they are getting more uses with G-Force diamonds than their existing brand-with many indicating a 300% to 400% increase. For an explanation of why, we again turn to the principle of a uniform layer of optimally spaced crystals. Diamonds that have several high crystals concentrate the cutting load to a smaller number of crystals, while the lower crystals may not even reach the tooth surface. Naturally, the few crystals that are doing the cutting will dull faster, shortening the life of the diamond. G-Force's uniform crystal layer distributes the cutting burden across many more crystals, thereby increasing the number of fast reliable cuts. Less Clogging. A diamond cannot cut well if it is clogged with enamel and dentin, so debris removal becomes a key component to a faster-cutting diamond. The more closely packed the diamond crystals are the more likely they are to get clogged, so several manufacturers have created spiral cut diamonds to aid in debris removal. This is helpful in the area of the spiral groove; unfortunately the closely packed crystals on the abrasive section of the diamond can still trap debris before it reaches the groove. G-Force diamonds have more space between crystals throughout the entire abrasive surface - not just in a groove. Water and debris are easily flushed through the crystals, helping to prevent clogging and maintaining cutting speed.
"Feel." Evaluators of the G-Force have made comments like "cuts like butter," or "smooth as silk." The feel of the diamond is a difficult thing to measure, but dentists are familiar with the vibration, chattering or skipping of a diamond that is not concentric. Seldom is the loss of concentricity a result of the steel blank of the instrument; rather, it can usually be attributed to inconsistent high and low crystals, which leads to vibration and a rough feeling cut. In contrast, an instrument with a very uniform layer of diamond crystals will cut more smoothly with less vibration or chatter. This is the smooth "feel" of a G-Force diamond. Smoothness the dentist can feel. Smoothness the patient can feel.
Surface Smoothness. Different dentists have different opinions about the smoothness of the finish on the tooth surface they desire when preparing a crown. Some dentists are not concerned about the roughness of the tooth surface imparted by their gross reduction diamond instrument. However, approximately half of the dentists in a survey by Garrison Dental indicated they go back over their crown preparation a second time with a finer grit diamond to smooth out the tooth surface and to refine the margins. These dentists may be pleased to know that G-Force uses a single medium grit-sized diamond for all its gross reduction instruments. So in most instances this second step can be eliminated, further reducing preparation time. The surface finish created by G-Force (18b and 18d), is smoother than that producted by a coarse-grit gross reduction diamond (18a and 18c).
Price and Value. Although price is not rated as highly as other attributes when selecting which brand of diamond to use, it can still be fairly stated that dentists want value. If the product solves a problem or makes the job faster, better or easier, the dentist will make a conscious assessment of value. The recent development of disposable diamonds is more a testament to the ease of use (no cleaning or sterilizing required) than it is to price. But with premium reusable diamonds, the dentist wants a diamond that both cuts fast and lasts for multiple uses. G-Force provides superior value by making crown preparation faster and by increasing the longevity of the instrument. So although G-Force is a premium diamond, the cost per use can be considerably lower than with other brands. A survey on www.dentaltown.com found that 73% of dentists indicated that they used their rotary instruments four or fewer times before discarding. Pre market evaluators of G-Force diamonds indicated that they were getting as much as 300% to 400% more uses than their existing brand of diamond. More uses and faster cutting speeds translate into: - Less time per crown preparation - Fewer instruments required - Lower expenses - Improved efficiency 1CRA newsletter, September 2001, volume 25, Issue 9. |
