Garrison Dental Solutions is certainly better known for its line of restorative products like Composi-Tight Gold and Wedge Wands. Even more recently, G-Force Diamonds, marked a strong move for us into the rotary instrument market. But why would we ever get involved with infection control materials? While it does seem like quite a leap from bands and burs it really comes down to our core philosophy of creating products that solve problems.
We all remember the media coverage a few years ago comparing dental unit water quality to that of toilet water ? with toilet water coming out on top. This was the problem. About that same time, we had sent Dr. Edgar Garrison to Australia to teach our dealers there how to demonstrate Composi-Tight. While there, he came across a company that had developed a very nifty system for cleaning waterlines. The apparent solution.
At this company hadn?t established any sales in the United States yet, we began to discuss the possibility of representing them here. It was evident after giving this possible partnership some thought that we were going to have a major problem setting up installation crews to install the system in dental offices all over the country. We had a brainstorming session to come up with a solution and the solution that came out of the meeting was just that. Skip the expensive equipment that needed installation and routine maintenance and just provide the active ingredients in a solution that the user could easily apply themselves.
A quick bit of research showed that there weren?t any products on the market with similar ingredients and similar application methods. In fact as we began to dig into things even further, it looked like we would be able to produce the first product that would be for continuous use that had no taste or smell and would not degrade bond strength. Then the hammer fell. Digging into the regulatory requirements we discovered that the FDA and EPA had agreed that solutions added to the dental chairs to control contamination would be classified as pesticides and must be registered with the EPA.
Doesn?t sound too bad does it? It is. It is a tough pile of government paperwork to work through and it takes a lot of time. We called the FDA because all the products that were remotely similar to ours had FDA 510k registrations but no EPA registration. Their answer was definitive, it?s fine that they were 510k registered, but they were now required to do the whole EPA thing too. We called the EPA. They said the same thing. We called our congressman. He helped us get to people higher up in those organizations, but to no avail. If you want to pour chemicals into a dental chair and sell them legally here in the states, they have to be EPA registered, period.
To make a long part of the story very short, we did it. It was hard, frustrating work. No one on the planet had ever registered a continuous use dental waterline product with the EPA until we did. This is one of the reasons H2Pro is your only complete waterline solution. Dental unit waterlines used to be a problem, that?s why we stepped outside of our normal restorative products. It?s another example of how we put ideas into practice.
- The first continuous use product registered with the EPA.
- Does not degrade bond strength.
- EASY and safe to use.
- Virtually no staff time required.
- EASY compliance monitoring.
- No maintenance ? no equipment to malfunction.
