Efficient Enamel Reduction. Predictable IPR.

IPR burs provide clinicians with an efficient rotary solution for creating precise interproximal space during clear aligner and orthodontic treatment. Unlike general-purpose diamond burs adapted for interproximal reduction, ProxiBur™ IPR burs are specifically designed to improve access, control, and predictability during IPR procedures.

With calibrated working thicknesses, specialized bur geometries, and multiple shapes for different clinical situations, ProxiBur™ helps simplify rotary IPR while complementing FitStrip™ abrasive strips for final finishing and refinement.

What Are IPR Burs?

IPR burs, or interproximal reduction burs, are thin rotary instruments used to selectively remove enamel between adjacent teeth. This creates the space needed to support planned tooth movement during clear aligner therapy or fixed orthodontic treatment.

Rotary IPR is particularly useful when larger amounts of interproximal enamel reduction are prescribed or when multiple contacts must be treated efficiently. ProxiBur™ IPR burs combine thin working profiles with calibrated thicknesses to help clinicians perform controlled enamel reduction while maintaining an efficient clinical workflow.

Common Uses for IPR Burs

  • Clear aligner therapy
  • Fixed orthodontic treatment
  • Space creation for tooth movement
  • Management of anterior crowding
  • Black triangle reduction
  • Tooth recontouring
  • Restorative space management
  • Flowable injection molding anterior cases

These applications align with the clinical uses identified in Garrison’s broader IPR workflow.

Why Choose ProxiBur™ IPR Burs?

Unlike general-purpose diamond burs which may require more precise freehand clinician technique, the ProxiBurs™ burs bring built-in control with calibrated thicknesses, specialized shapes, and controlled enamel reduction to consistently achieve predictable workflow.

Key Benefits

  • Designed specifically for IPR
  • Calibrated working thicknesses
  • Thin profiles for interproximal access
  • Multiple shapes for different clinical situations
  • Efficient gross enamel reduction
  • Organized system for easier instrument selection
  • Complements FitStrip™ abrasive strips
  • Supports an efficient rotary IPR workflow

ProxiBur’s™ combination of specialized geometries, calibrated thicknesses, and select tapered designs is intended to improve access and control compared with conventional diamond burs used freehand for IPR.

As seen below, Garrison ProxiBur™ IPR burs are much thinner than a generic diamond bur.

  • Not designed specifically for IPR resulting in greater thickness
  • Requires advanced freehand technique to achieve desired IPR
  • Not part of an organized, comprehensive IPR solution
  • Calibrated thickness for IPR allowing for extremely thin IPR burs (all the way down to 0.20 mm at the tip of PRXR02S)
  • Specified thickness in description and on bur block allows for easy-to-use technique
  • Organized system designed and engineered to complement IPR FitStrips™

Why Use IPR Burs Instead of Discs?

Both rotary discs and IPR burs can be used for enamel reduction, but their handling and access characteristics differ. ProxiBur™ IPR burs offer thin working profiles and multiple specialized shapes intended for direct access to the interproximal space.

Advantages of IPR Burs

  • Improved visibility and access
  • Enhanced safety for soft tissues as rotary discs are more aggressive than burs
  • No separate handpiece needed, as opposed to a reciprocating disc system
  • Multiple geometries for different tooth anatomies
  • Calibrated working thicknesses
  • Familiar rotary handpiece technique
  • Efficient gross reduction
  • Easier integration with finishing strips (such as FitStrip™)
  • No separate disc guard or disc system required

Frequently Asked Questions About IPR Burs

Q: What are IPR burs used for?

A: IPR burs are used to selectively remove enamel between adjacent teeth. This creates space for planned tooth movement during clear aligner or fixed orthodontic treatment and can support procedures such as black triangle reduction and tooth recontouring.

Q: When should I use IPR burs instead of strips?

A: IPR burs are especially useful when approximately 0.30 mm or more of enamel reduction is planned, when several contacts must be treated, or when efficiency is important. Abrasive strips are generally better suited to smaller reductions and final finishing.

Q: Can I use IPR burs and strips together?

A: Yes. A hybrid workflow uses ProxiBur™ for efficient gross reduction for ≥ 0.30mm of enamel reduction, and FitStrip™ for < 0.30mm of enamel reduction and final contouring, smoothing, and refinement

Q: Are ProxiBur™ IPR burs calibrated?

A: ProxiBur™ IPR burs are offered in calibrated working thicknesses designed to make instrument selection and planned reduction more predictable.

Q: Can IPR burs open a tight contact?

A: Select tapered ProxiBur™ designs, including the PRXR02S and PRXR03S shapes referenced in Garrison’s IPR workflow, can be used at the contact-opening stage.

Q: How do I know how much enamel has been removed?

A: The resulting interproximal space can be checked with appropriately sized IPR gauges, such as FPSGAUGE. Garrison’s current IPR portfolio includes IPR gauges alongside ProxiBur™ and FitStrip™ instruments.
